The GOP's New Hope?
Jim Bourg / Reuters
Forget Palin. How Tim Pawlenty, a (mostly) moderate, working-class guy from the frozen North could win over the GOP in 2012.
As the Republican Governors Association gathers in Austin this week, there is a real sense among conservatives that the Obama Bubble is about to burst. And all eyes are on the assembled governors to see who might do the bursting in 2012. Ever since his 2002 election, I've kept close tabs on Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota. As governor, Pawlenty coined the phrase “Sam’s Club Republican,” which Ross Douthat and I later used to refer to a strain of Republicanism that aims to meet the needs of working and middle class voters. In an interview with the Ripon Society, a storied think tank for GOP moderates, Pawlenty described the essence of Sam's Club Republicanism. "People who are going to Sam’s Club don’t have more money," said Pawlenty, and so "they have to live on a budget, and they still have to meet needs."
One wonders if Pawlenty is repeating the mistake Mitt Romney made in 2008 by trading in his hard-won reputation as a pragmatic problem-solver in exchange for tissue-thin conservative credibility.
Now Pawlenty finds himself lurching from the frozen north into the crosshairs of national politics. How’s he doing?
Recent months seem to have vindicated this brand of cost-conscious Sam's Club Republicanism. The hope among conservatives is that Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell, the newly elected governors of New Jersey and Virginia, are a harbinger of major Republican victories in gubernatorial races next year. Both candidates won in states that President Obama won in 2009, suggesting that at least some independent voters have soured on the expansive and expensive Democratic agenda. Next year, the RGA is paying particular attention to races in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, all Obama states that have been hit particularly hard by rising unemployment. It's easy to see how a governor with a proven track record and a focus on bread-and-butter issues could do well. There are at least four sitting Republican governors who are considered potential presidential contenders. But only Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota is doing the hard work of gathering his forces, hiring consultants, and raising his national profile.
On paper, Tim Pawlenty's appeal is clear. As the two-term governor of Minnesota, he has a demonstrated ability to win the votes of Democrats and independents. To defeat Barack Obama, Republicans will have to break out of their demographic box, and that means winning races in the Upper Midwest and other regions that have proven inhospitable terrain for at least the last decade. As the first member of his working-class family to graduate from college, Pawlenty has a compelling personal story. Pawlenty also has a reputation as a likable and even gentle campaigner, who isn't inclined to use scorched-earth tactics against his opponents, a break with the anger to tea-party activists who've energized the conservative base but who might also turn off swing voters who like their leader even-tempered.
It's also true, however, that Pawlenty didn't win a majority in 2002 or 2006, and his margin of victory the last time around was incredibly narrow: he won 46.7 percent to 45.7 for Democratic Attorney General Mike Hatch. Had Pawlenty received the vice presidential nomination in 2008, it is by no means clear that he could have secured Minnesota for John McCain. By way of contrast, in Indiana, which also went for Obama, Mitch Daniels crushed his Democratic opponent Jill Long Thompson by 57.8 percent to 40.1 percent. A Star Tribune Minnesota Poll conducted in late September found that 55 percent of Minnesotans don't want Pawlenty to run for the presidency, though 50 percent of them would at least consider voting for him if he did. These aren't very inspiring numbers, and Minnesota voters have had almost eight years to get to know Pawlenty.

we're all overwhelmed with excitement!

So, what does he stand for? I will not tolerate constitutional violation number 1. Corrupt government will not provide healthcare. They will create a pool of mone for them to rob will also violating our liberties PERIOD. NO MODERATE FOR ME.
OffenbachStutz
What, pray tell, do you mean by "liberties"?
nortonclybourn
You're lucky there's no requirement that citizens of the US must speak English, or you would be disqualified. You probably don't bother to vote anyway, so it hardly matters.

How Tim Pawlenty, a (mostly) moderate, working-class guy from the frozen North...
======
Who are you trying to kid ? The man himself marched out his press squad the other day to REAFFIRM that he has one of the MOST CONSERVATIVE records to be found in the Universe ...
Don't let him hear you label him "Moderate" ...
janet1003mn
He is not a "moderate," but please allow me to assure you that Tim Pawlenty will take whatever label will do the trick to win the Republican nomination in 2012. He's "moderate" when in the company of WF Buckleyesque conservatives. He's "foaming-at-the-mouth, hard-right Fundy" when riding Sarah Palin's coattails to endorse that buffoon from upstate NY whose name I've already (thankfully) forgotten. Don't let all that "bland" fool you. He's cagey and extremely ambitious. He's famous in Minnesota for being the veto king. (http://www.citypages.com/2008-07-23/news/tim-pawlenty-governor-no) It's easy to say his national ambitions are what caused him to shelve the idea of a third term as governor. Truth be told, it's doubtful he'd be able to squeak out another election here. In our ADHD world, it's easy to forget yesterday's news, but those of us who remember that the US suffered the worst terror attack in our history under the supposedly watchful eye of Bush/Cheney, also remember, that the 35W bridge fell into the Mississippi River at least in part because of Pawlenty's/Republicans' misplaced financial priorities.

Well said!

Sam's Club Republicans?!! LOL. That's hilarious. I new brand of Republicanism that's sponsored by the largest company in the world - Wal-Mart. LOLOL
spotted
Sam's Club is just the right place, since the poor people who frequent WalMart can't afford to pay the membership fee.
BTW is Costco where the D's shop? They sell books there so maybe it's for the liberal elite.
Cforchange
"Sam's Club Republican" perfectly describes the fiscal problem with the GOP. Sam's club shopping is not smart for the wallet, the economy nor the environment.
"Sam's Club Republican" describes the new GOP where fiscal smarts do not matter. They are the social cons Republican's. That's it, nothing else - social cons.
Really folks admit the economy isn't that bad because why would foks continue to pay just to enter a store where they score a discount on 100lbs of bananas but later throw out the remaining 95 pounds that you couldn't be consumed.
Time for "Rhino hunting" of the "Sam's Club Republican" let's just see if any of them have a self funded an IRA. Bet the answer is - what's that? One more thing - Pawlenty, triple yawn.
toddanthonydirect
A place that sells books is for the liberal elite? LOL. You're ridiculous.

Pawlenty has been without a doubt the worst govenor the once prosperous state of MN has ever had. Problem-solver? He never not even one single year solved the problem of balancing the budget and has now led the state to a record 6 billion dollar deficit. Infrastructure is crumbling, abolished health care for the poor, cut spending for education followed by falling test scores, and diminished the quality of life. Just think now little Timmy Pawlenty is ready to do the same for the nation.
janet1003mn
You said it!
tolatetocry
and they got a freak for a senator and Jessie Ventura is their past gov, so people of MN are not the brightest bulbs we got!
xlntcat
Well that is what is so confusing because prior to their decline the were in fact leading the nation in test scores. Why educated people are accepting this from politicians is confusing.
mmanion
We HAD a freak for a senator. He lost the recount, remember? Plus, Jesse was not a half bad administrator. He was annoying as hell to listen to, but he did an okay job. There is one district with not very bright bulbs, as you say. That is Minnesota 6. They not only elected a certifiable nut, but they actually re-elected Michele Bachmann. Local wisdom indicates that a large chunk of that district is inbred (really--13,000 people 2 last names) which leads to all sorts of bizarre political outcomes. Has anyone checked to see how many fingers and toes Michele Bachmann has?
mmanion
As a Minnesotan, let me echo your comments. He was opposed to our successful light rail system before he was for it (and took credit for it, to boot, after fighting against it tooth and nail). One of his first budget cuts after taking office was to public libraries, limiting evening and weekend hours. This while his wife was on a publicity blitz to encourage kids to read. Apparently, she only meant the kids of people who could afford to buy books or who were wealthy enough to not have to work during the day when the libraries were open. His wife, a former judge, abdicated her judicial responsibilities preferring to pray and leave the decisions taxpayers intended her education and background to decide up to God--or at least her interpretation of what he wanted. Even most Republicans in Minnesota are progressive, or at least more progressive than Pawlenty. He's an aberration.
Still, he is just so precious when he tries to get all 'angry right,' sort of like a little boy having a tantrum. It's fun to watch, even though I think he is the longest of shots for the 2012 nomination.
Southpaw
Now let's see what Salam saysare Pawlenty's positives:
- he has ability to win votes
- he's likable and gentle
- he was a working class boy who graduated from college
All fine and dandy, but what about are his policy positions for the future?
penalcolony
Two days ago, St. Cloud State University released a poll showing that Obama would beat Pawlenty in his home state, 49% to 40%. Salam knows this, of course, but is far too dishonest to bring it up.
theschmooze
Seems like Pawlenty is another example of the GOP struggle for a viable candidate. The struggle in 2008 taught the GOP nothing.
byersl
This guy flips more than Romney. If this is the GOP's secret weapon, we Dems can go ahead and send in Maxwell Smart to take care of him! James Bond will be battling the bad guys in the real fights we have coming!
birdfanMN
Pawlenty has cut state spending....Health Care to POOR CHILDREN. He's a BORROW AND SPEND GUY who didn't work well across party lines. Come to think of it we haven't seen much of him lately. I guess with UNEMPLOYMENT AT 8.5%, he thinks it's OK TO SUCK UP WITH THE FAR RIGHT TO A LINE HIMSELF FOR HIS NEXT "JOB." President Obama would crush his guy like a bug.
diamondgirl
Obama is not going to crush anyone in 2012, wake up and smell the Socialism, he is done. One Term President!
AlanD2
Wake up and smell reality, diamondgirl. I'm afraid you're in for a massive disappointment in 2012, especially if you run Palin.
tolatetocry
they got a plan, bring in 30 million mexicans to vote!
xlntcat
He cut state spending on education and healthcare to the poor while never cutting anything sufficient to bring the budget into balance leaving MN is bad shape to face the economic downturn and is now facing unprecidented deficts in the billion.
DakLak
Pawlenty, definitely charismatic, compared to Palin!
Donillini
As for the losses in VA and NJ, why can't anybody see that the Democrats in the races were simply not liked by their home states? I highly doubt NJ will vote Republican in 2012. Why is Obama's fault, but not Corzine's fault?
AlanD2
Probably because conservatives are desperate for anything positive to say about the Republican Party, Donillini.
leechlake
I'm from Minnesota, and T-Paw the D-bag won in the low 40's each time he was elected. The guy is a complete and total piece of shit and is not at all popular in Minnesota. This kind of lousy piece is what happens when people on the national scence who don't know their ass from their elbow start spouting off like they actually know something about places like Minnesota. I'm guessing Reihan hasn't even been to Minnesota.
janet1003mn
You said it!
Mhussein
You go girl...or guy...lol
He sucks!!!!!
Clancy
It,s bad enough that we in Minnesota have had to put up with his inabilty to compromise wit anyone. Even the state legislature told groups to sue him. He would not listen to anyone but those that liked his kool aid. He is unresponsive to the needs of the people in this state. What would change if he ran.
janet1003mn
Nation take heed. Look at MN's key numbers (on health care, education, economic resilience, etc.) before and after T-Paw. And read everything you can find on the guy. If you can stomach it, especially search out anything that compares him directly to Arne Carlson, another Republican MN governor. (Now THERE'S a guy who would probably STILL be winning the office if he hadn't limited himself to two terms in office.) Talk about not ready for prime time! This guy better never be the most powerful leader of the free world. We'd barely fare better under him than we could under that winkin', colloquialism spoutin', secessionist-lovin' nightmare from Alaska.
xlntcat
Even the party leaders have begun to have serious doubts regarding Pawlenty's viability due to making a public statement that Snowe, the GOP Senator from Maine should be kicked out and being forced to retract and apologize, jumping out to state that MN would opt-out of the public option when he will have absolutely no say so on what MN does, and jumping on the band wagon to endorse the conservative loser of NY-23. He looks unprepared and desperate and totally without any principles he is willing to adhere to. You will note that seasoned GOP probable candidates aren't making these mistakes.
Myshadow
pawlenty is a total douche.
Between reihan salam and nichole wallace the DB has the two dimmist pundits this side of fred barnes.
MamaBear3
I live in Minnesota. Pawlenty is not really impressive. He functions. He barely exceeds the minimum requirements. There have been no scandals. I suppose we can be grateful for that. Question - What qualities does he hold that make him the kind of leader this nation needs? World Stage... doubtful. He is a better choice than our Congresswoman for the 6th District, I suppose. Scary.
sdavidson14
I live in Mn also - I don't like him. The state is for the worse under him.

My cat is a better choice than Bachmann.

The secret weapon is Joe Scarborough tell it like you see it,He is the next Reagan and the Democrats should be worried about Joe ,"NOT" Timmy, he too was a democrat like Reagan was,he could pull a Ronald Reagan on the democrats ,and say what Reagan said, about democrats are you democrats ready and had enough, he could have some democrats follow him like they did Reagan, Tim Pawlenty is "WEAK" and he is "NO" Obama thats for sure, if the Re-publicans are relying on Timmy to win the whitehouse ,there badly mistaken, Obama would kick his ass in the general...........! Timmy has "NO" star power and Sarah Bush would hurt them also....! don't forget the secret weapon would be Joe Scarborough "NOT" Timmy Pawlenty
MouseWife
Agreed, Matthew. I think Scarborough is the dark horse for 2012. Conservative voting record, federalist/libertarian on the social issues. He's smart enough to run on McDonnel's platform of less government! Let's get the government out of our wallets and out of our bedrooms and return to a sane foreign policy that won't bankrupt us.
AlanD2
But don't forget that Joe works for MSNBC - a poison apple for conservatives.
xlntcat
Scarborough fled Washington with a dead female aid discovered in his office and leaving a trail of cover up with his fingerprints all over it. He is finished as a national politician. He couldn't control his substance abuse long enough to make it through a campaign.
mmanion
Why would Joe give up his cushy high-paying job for a high-stress relatively low paying job? Besides, a run would resurrect this little nightmare for him: http://www.americanpolitics.com/20010808Klausutis.html. He has done a remarkable job sweeping this under the rug (happened at the same time as Chandra Levy, but no one heard about it), even having references to the incident scrubbed on Wikipedia. Klausutis's parents and other have been trying to reopen the investigation since it happened. There's no way they would let Scarborough run without getting some answers from him.
Southpaw
No young, top tier politician wants to run against an incumbent president. Only the second tier will likely put themselves forward for 2012. With a stretch Scarbourough might fall into the latter group, but that dead intern business puts the kibosh on any presidential ambitions for him.
Thank you.
