I'm reading The State of Jones by Sally Jenkins and John Stauffer. Jenkins, one of the most gifted sportswrtiers of our time, teams up with an eminent Harvard historian to bring a little-known (and deliberately hidden) chapter of our history to life. Newton Knight led a band of heroes in Jones County, Mississippi, to oppose the Confederacy. A mini-civil war, with much of the cruelty and carnage of the larger war, played out in Jones County. The book is filled with original research from heretofore unknown documents, yet it carries the reader along a compelling and powerful narrative. A must read for anyone who thinks they know the history of the Civil War, the American South, and race in America. |

Years ago, an American History professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dropped a reference to Knight and Jones County in his undergrad classroom, and promised to follow up on it next class or so, but never did. It seemed intriguing, but life went on, and I all but forgot to follow up on the reference. This is now the second allusion to it in my recollection, and I won't let the thread unravel any further. Just ordered the book. Thanks to Paul Begala for the recommendation.

If you are interested in the true history of the free State of Jones County, MIssiisiisppi, you might read Victoria Bynum's Book, "The Free State of Jones" published about 2002. This book is well researched and documented. and relates what actually happened regarding Newt Knight and the Jones County men who were Unionist.
Thank you.
